NGC Part of Strategic Planning Session for Nunatsiavut Fisheries
With quotas of northern shrimp, as well as turbot and Atlantic Halibut, and a plan to develop food and nutritional products from Nunatsiavut’s abundant harp seal resource, the Nunatsiavut Group of Companies is well positioned to play a larger role in the region’s fishery.
In mid-November, NGC participated for the first time in a Strategic Planning session on the opportunities and challenges in further developing various fisheries in Nunatsiavut.
Led by Dr. Alistair Bath, a Memorial University Geography professor with expertise in wildlife resource management, the session identified the roadblocks to further development of the fishery in Nunatsiavut.
“This was about bringing everyone involved in Nunatsiavut fisheries together to identify the issues on one hand, but also develop goals and a vision for the fishery in Nunatsiavut,” stated Erin Everard, NGC Business Development Executive. “We were happy to engage with all of the fisheries partners in Nunatsiavut and to talk about Nuluak, our fisheries enterprise, NGC’s partnership in PiKalujak Fisheries, and the plan to explore the vast opportunities in the Nunatsiavut harp seal resource.”
The planning session was convened by Torngat Wildlife, Plants, and Fisheries Secretariat (TWPFS). TWPFS conducts research on various fish and wildlife species in Nunatsiavut and utilizes that knowledge to manage resources. Officials analyze data and prioritize Inuit knowledge about resource stewardship to ensure sustainable practices that recognize conservation and Inuit cultural values.
