To the casual observer, the steel containers at the ports of Rigolet, Hopedale, Postville, and Nain are unimpressive. But look inside the white refrigerated containers after the arrival of the Kamutik W, and there will be packages of frozen and perishable food for local residents.
Those units are just one of the investments Nunatsiavut Marine Inc. (NMI) has made to improve the coastal freight service. The goods packed inside those units have been transported in 53-foot refrigerated trailers, another of NMI’s purchases to improve service to the North Coast .
“These units have vastly improved the service that we provide to people” says NMI Manager of Marine Operations, Dwayne Canning. “The 53-foot refrigerated trailers replaced 20-foot reefer containers that ran on diesel during transit and after they were landed in port. We’d typically drop the 20-foot units off on our way up the coast and retrieve them on the way back. All the while, they ran on diesel generators. The way we do things now has substantially reduced our environmental footprint.”
